Applications and forms can be necessary for various reasons. For example, if you want to have previous study achievements recognized or apply for a grade cancellation, you will need the corresponding applications and forms. On this page you will find all the documents, the corresponding addressees and the possible deadlines.

Depending on your valid examination regulations ("PO"), there are different specifications for the type of submission or, for example, the number of affidavits. It is therefore worth taking a look at your own PO before submitting an application.

Theses

For a successful thesis there are some steps to take, which starts with the application. Along the way, there may be imponderables or lucky coincidences that require an application.

Before you can register your thesis, the ZPA first checks whether you meet the admission requirements. This is done using the registration form provided here, which is then further completed by your examiner. When you start the registration process, you have exactly four months for the Bachelor thesis and six months for the Master thesis. You will also be informed by mail about the exact submission date.

  • Receiver: Examination board computer science.
  • Deadlines: None.
  • Note: If you would like to use an RWTH logo for your cover page, the corporate design regulations apply and an application for logo use must be submitted. This can be found in the next dropdown ↓.

https://pa.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/application/register-thesis

Students are allowed to use the logo of the institution where they write their exam paper under certain conditions. In accordance with the corporate design of RWTH Aachen University, the logo of institutions is always used together with the RWTH logo. To use it, certain conditions must be met and an application must be submitted.

  • Receiver: In the case of theses, the form must be submitted to the ZPA. In the case of other written work, the form must be submitted to the relevant chair/institute.
  • Deadlines: The application can be submitted with the registration of the thesis at any time until the submission of the thesis at the latest.
  • Note: It is recommended to submit the application together with the thesis registration.

The examination regulations provide for the possibility of deleting module grades if you complete your studies in the standard period of study. In this case, the grade of one or more modules is replaced by "passed" and is therefore not included in the calculation of the overall grade. However, the original grade is shown in a separate section. A total of up to 30 credits can be deleted. More detailed information on the scope and deletable modules can be found in the examination regulations. A module grade will only be cancelled upon request.

  • Receiver: If possible, the application should be sent by email to the responsible administrator at the ZPA.
  • Deadlines: The application must be submitted to the ZPA no later than one week after the result of your last examination has been registered.
  • Note: Of course, you can also submit your application earlier. Please note, however, that the ZPA will still only implement the grade cancellation once your degree has been awarded and it has been determined that you have completed your studies in the standard period of study. Once a module grade has been cancelled, it cannot be reversed. Here you can also find an online tool for calculating grade cancellations, which was kindly provided by a student.

If you have already completed your thesis and colloquium, but no grade has been registered yet, you can apply for a pass certificate. This will help you if you want to enroll in a new program (for example, the Master's program), for which proof of graduation is required.

  • Receiver: Depending on the purpose. For example, for a successful enrollment, the certificate must be sent to the responsible administrator of the ZPA.
  • Deadlines: None.
  • Note: A 4.0 certificate is not your final certificate. It merely confirms that both the final examination and the colloqium were passed with a grade of at least 4.0. It must be signed by the first and second examiner.

When submitting a thesis, it is also necessary to submit an statutory declaration in which you declare that you have completed it independently and without outside help.

  • Receiver: To be enclosed with submission or to be included in the work.
  • Deadlines: With submission of the thesis.

In individual cases, an extension of the processing time of a thesis is possible: for Bachelor's theses by a maximum of four weeks, for Master's theses by a maximum of six weeks. In this case, you must submit a justified request to the examination board, which will decide on this in consultation with your examiners. As soon as you have received the decision from the examination board, the new submission date will be entered in RWTHonline. You can view it there under "My achievements".

  • Receiver: Examination board computer science.
  • Deadlines:
  • Note: Please note that a temporary illness is not a reason for an extension of the processing time. Chronically ill students as well as students with a disability can, however, be granted an extension of the processing time via a disadvantage compensation.

If you want to change the title of your thesis after registration, this is only possible with the approval of the examination board. As soon as the decision of the examination board has been received, the new title will be entered in RWTHonline, where you can view it under "My achievements".

  • Receiver: Examination board computer science.
  • Deadlines:
  • Note: If the ZPA finds out after submission that the title printed on the cover sheet differs from the one printed on the application, the paper cannot be forwarded to your examiners. Either you submit a new cover sheet with the original title to the ZPA or you contact your examination board with a request for a change of title. Until the corresponding decision is received, the work remains at the ZPA.

Enrollment at the RWTH

Both the application for a study place and the enrollment at the RWTH take place via RWTHonline. After all admission requirements have been checked and you have accepted the offer of a study place, an application for enrollment, an affidavit and proof of your language skills are required for enrollment.

The application for enrollment will be made available to you directly in RWTHonline with your applications. You can view your application under the tab "My applications".

  • Receiver: Registrar's Office.
  • Deadlines: Enrollment is only possible until October 31 for the winter semester and April 30 for the summer semester. All necessary documents must therefore be uploaded by this date.
  • Note: Please submit the application only via the portal in RWTHonline and not separately.

Click here for the application in RWTHonline.

By means of the statutory declaration, you affirm that you have not definitively failed any course of study or subject of study or that you can no longer be admitted to any required examination. The hand-signed statutory declaration is a prerequisite for every enrollment in a bachelor's, state examination or master's degree program.

  • Receiver: Registrar's Office.
  • Deadlines: Enrollment is only possible until October 31 for the winter semester and April 30 for the summer semester. All necessary documents must therefore be uploaded by this date.

Previous academic achievements

Previous coursework may have been completed and recognized through a change of university or major.

The subject of a possible recognition are examination achievements which have been achieved in study courses at the RWTH, at other state or state-recognized universities, at state or state-recognized vocational academies or at foreign state or state-recognized universities. In addition, according to § 63 a para. 7 HG NRW, other knowledge and qualifications can be recognized if they are equivalent in terms of content and level. Recognition applied for will be granted if there is no significant difference between the acquired competencies and the achievements that are being replaced.

  • Receiver: Examination board computer science.
  • Deadlines: None. However, all desired services must be recognized no later than the completion of the current degree program.

Application Area

In the course-specific examination regulations of the computer science courses, the application areas business administration, biology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, medicine and chemistry are provided for. Additional application areas may be approved upon application to the Examination Board Computer Science.

The PO 2018 provides for an application subject with 22 CP, which must be taken in full. The latest PO 2022 defines an application area, which means that modules of 12 - 18 CP can be taken from different areas.

The application subject Medicine is not yet officially provided for in the examination regulations, but it is already completely designed as an application area and there is a study plan for the Bachelor Computer Science up to PO 2018 and also a study plan for the Master Computer Science. Because of this, there is already a separate application for the recognition of this subject.

  • Receiver: Examination board computer science.
  • Deadlines: The choice of the application subject must be notified to the ZPA at the latest with the registration of the Bachelor thesis.

https://pa.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/application/approval-of-medicine-as-minor

It is also possible to apply for the admission of new application subjects. In this case, please first contact the departmental student advisor or register for a corresponding consultation session. Only after a consultation, please submit a corresponding application for approval of an application subject.

Certificates must be obtained immediately, i.e. usually no later than the day of the examination. They must be available at the ZPA in the original or as a digital version no later than the third working day after the respective examination date. In the case of an oral examination, the examiner must also be informed.

Please be sure to write your matriculation number and the exams in question on the certificate.

It is mandatory that the submitted certificate meets the following content requirements:

More

If you have completed achievements that go beyond those required to complete your degree, these can be included on the transcript as additional achievements. They will then be listed in a separate section at the end of the certificate and neither the grade nor the CP will be included in the overall calculation.

A performance can only be included as an additional performance if you have actually performed a performance that was evaluated at least with "pass" and for which you received CP. Pure proof of participation cannot be claimed.

More detailed information on various cases can also be found here.

Gaining practical experience, studying abroad for a semester, or raising a child-there are many reasons to take a leave of absence from your studies for a certain period of time. According to the legal requirements of the Higher Education Act, students can be granted a leave of absence from their studies for good cause.

  • Receiver: You can apply for a leave of absence in person, by postal mail, or scanned in by e-mail to the Registrar's Office. The responsible contact person can be found here.
  • Deadline: Leave of absence must be applied for during the re-registration period using the form issued by the university and enclosing the necessary supporting documents. In justified cases, the application for leave of absence can still be submitted until the end of the first month of lectures.
  • Note: An application for leave of absence must also be actively submitted for a semester abroad.
