Questions before and about the consultation

Find out. There's no harm in trying. The conversation remains completely confidential and takes place in an informal atmosphere. You can stop it at any time. Is a consultation the right thing for me?

If you are unsure whether you are in the right place with your request, you are welcome to describe your request and ask questions as part of the brief consultation by e-mail Is Mentoring the right contact for my request?

If we are unable to help you, we will be happy to give you the name of the right contact person or refer you to relevant offices and other help and advice services.

Please note: in order to complete the Bachelor's degree course in the summer semester, all examinations must be completed by September 30; for completion in the winter semester, all examinations must be completed by March 31. If the final examinations are completed after the relevant deadline, it is possible to transfer to the Master's degree course as described above, but the number of semesters required for the Bachelor's degree course will still increase.

The advisory service is primarily aimed at students on the Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science and, depending on the topic, at Master's students.

For students of the international Master's degree programs in Computer Science, the Student Advisory Services are responsible.

Certificates of achievement will be issued immediately by the Study Center for Computer Science.

Start of studies in winter

In the first semester introductory event, you will receive all the important information about your studies so that you can start the lecture period well prepared. This is a subject-specific information event organized by the Computer Science department. There are at least two good reasons not to miss it.

  1. This event usually takes place on the first day of the introductory week or days. Here you will not only get a good overview of the entire Bachelor's degree course, but also up-to-date information on the compulsory courses of the first semester. As a rule, the professors of the compulsory courses also briefly introduce themselves.
  2. During this course, you will be assigned to a mentoring group. Mentoring in Computer Science is one of the compulsory events in the first semester. After the event, you will have the opportunity to get to know your mentor and the students in your mentoring group in an informal atmosphere.

When and where the event takes place will be announced on the website of the Study Center .

First semester groups for computer science mentoring

Mentoring will help you find your way around the university and successfully master your first semester.

  • How do I plan the semester?
  • Which online systems can I use and how do they work?
  • How do I learn properly and how do I find the right learning group?
  • What is the best way to prepare for exams and how do I deal with stress?
  • No apartment yet - what now? Should I commute or should I look for a place to live? What about financing?
  • What is the Department of Computer Science?

This is just a small selection of the many questions, problems and uncertainties that you may face in the initial phase of your studies and which can be very stressful.

Our mentoring program in the first year of study offers you intensive support and individual advice to make it easier for you to start your studies. You will meet once a week in small mentoring groups. Here you will not only deal with topics relevant to your studies, but also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with your fellow students and build up a helpful network right from the start.

Find more here.

You will be assigned to a mentoring group during the first semester introductory event in Freshers' Week. Your mentor will accompany you and your group throughout the entire introductory week.

The mentors are computer science students from higher semesters who are intensively prepared for their tasks. This allows you to benefit from the experience of advanced students who were in the same situation as you not so long ago.

The mentoring groups meet weekly during the semester and work together on topics relevant to your studies, which will help you find your way into your studies and master the challenges of studying.

Computer Science Mentoring is one of the compulsory courses on the Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science in the first and second semesters.

Active participation in mentoring is recognized with 1 CP (credit point). There is no alternative module with which this credit can be acquired.

In PO2022, mentoring is a prerequisite for all compulsory courses from the 4th semester onwards.

If you have completed at least 30 credits in your old degree program, you can be exempted. To do this, submit an application of recognition of academic achievements to the Examination Board for Computer Science. Please get in touch with the academic advisor. You can find further information on submitting an application in the application system of the Examination Board at Credit transfer.

Via an RWTHonline registration procedure for the event Mentoring computer science - first semester groups.

You will then be given access to the RWTHmoodle learning room for the mentoring event, where you will find all further information.

Please note:Registration in RWTHonline does not mean automatic allocation to the mentoring groups. Allocation to the groups takes place in the subject-specific introductory event during the first semester introductory week.

If you have good reasons for not participating in the subject-specific introductory event for first semester students please attend the standard mentoring group directly in the first week of lectures on Tuesday, 10.10.2023, 10:30 am. It meets in the Computer Science Center, building section E3 (2359), 2nd floor, room 222.subject-specific first semester introductory event
