abstract = {We introduce a Personal Fabrication workflow to easily create feature-rich 3D objects with textile-covered surfaces. Our approach unfolds a 3D model into a series of flat frames with connectors, which are then 3D-printed onto a piece of fabric, and folded manually into the shape of the original model. This opens up an accessible way to incorporate established 2D textile workflows, such as embroidery, using color patterns, and combining different fabrics, when creating 3D objects. FabricFaces objects can also be flattened again easily for transport and storage. We provide an open-source plugin for the common 3D tool Blender. It enables a one-click workflow to turn a user-provided model into 3D printer instructions, textile cut patterns, and connector support. Generated frames can be refined quickly and iteratively through previews and extensive options for manual intervention. We present example objects illustrating a variety of use cases.},

abstract = {Toolkits like the Arduino system have brought embedded programming to STEM education. However, learning embedded programming is still hard, requiring an understanding of coding, electronics, and how both sides interact. To investigate the opportunities of using a different programming paradigm than the imperative approach to learning embedded coding, we developed Flowboard. Students code in a visual iPad editor using flow-based programming, which is conceptually closer to circuit diagrams than imperative code. Two breadboards with I/O pins mirrored on the iPad connect electronics and program graph more seamlessly than existing IDEs. Program changes take effect immediately. This liveness reflects circuit behavior better than edit-compile-run loops. A first study confirmed that students can solve basic embedded programming tasks with Flowboard while highlighting important differences to a typical imperative IDE, Ardublock. A second, in-depth study provided qualitative insights into Flowboard\'s impact on students\' conceptual models of electronics and embedded programming and exploring those.},

abstract = {Soft robotics uses soft, flexible materials and elastic actuation mechanisms to create systems that are more adaptable and tolerant to unknown environments, and safer for human-machine interaction, than rigid robots. Pneumatic soft robots can be fabricated using more affordable materials compared to traditional robots and make use of technologies such as 3D printing, making them an attractive choice for research and DIY projects. However, their design is still highly unintuitive, and at up to two days, design iterations can take prohibitively long: The behavior of, e.g., a pneumatic silicone gripper only becomes apparent after designing and 3D printing its mold, casting, curing, assembling, and testing it. We introduce SoRoCAD, a design tool supporting a Maker-friendly soft robotics design and fabrication pipeline that incorporates simulating the final actuation into the design process.},

abstract = {Previous approaches to generate shapes in a 3D setting train a GAN on the latent space of an autoencoder (AE). Even though this produces convincing results, it has two major shortcomings. As the GAN is limited to reproduce the dataset the AE was trained on, we cannot reuse a trained AE for novel data. Furthermore, it is difficult to add spatial supervision into the generation process, as the AE only gives us a global representation. To remedy these issues, we propose to train the GAN on grids (i.e. each cell covers a part of a shape). In this representation each cell is equipped with a latent vector provided by an AE. This localized representation enables more expressiveness (since the cell-based latent vectors can be combined in novel ways) as well as spatial control of the generation process (e.g. via bounding boxes). Our method outperforms the current state of the art on all established evaluation measures, proposed for quantitatively evaluating the generative capabilities of GANs. We show limitations of these measures and propose the adaptation of a robust criterion from statistical analysis as an alternative.},

abstract = {State of the art quadrangulation methods are able to reliably and robustly convert triangle meshes into quad meshes. Most of these methods rely on a dense direction field that is used to align a parametrization from which a quad mesh can be extracted. In this context, the aforementioned direction field is of particular importance, as it plays a key role in determining the structure of the generated quad mesh. If there are no user-provided directions available, the direction field is usually interpolated from a subset of principal curvature directions. To this end, a number of heuristics that aim to identify significant surface regions have been proposed. Unfortunately, the resulting fields often fail to capture the structure found in meshes created by human experts. This is due to the fact that experienced designers can leverage their domain knowledge in order to optimize a mesh for a specific application. In the context of physics simulation, for example, a designer might prefer an alignment and local refinement that facilitates a more accurate numerical simulation. Similarly, a character artist may prefer an alignment that makes the resulting mesh easier to animate. Crucially, this higher level domain knowledge cannot be easily extracted from local curvature information alone. Motivated by this issue, we propose a data-driven approach to the computation of direction fields that allows us to mimic the structure found in existing meshes, which could originate from human experts or other sources. More specifically, we make use of a neural network that aggregates global and local shape information in order to compute a direction field that can be used to guide a parametrization-based quad meshing method. Our approach is a first step towards addressing this challenging problem with a fully automatic learning-based method. We show that compared to classical techniques our data-driven approach combined with a robust model-driven method, is able to produce results that more closely exhibit the ground truth structure of a synthetic dataset (i.e. a manually designed quad mesh template fitted to a variety of human body types in a set of different poses).},

all areas of everyday life as a result of ongoing
digitalization. This also holds for seniors who are
technology-distant which means, that they have had little or
no previous contact with digital technologies. Digital
competence is here understood as the combination of media
competence and computer science competence, i.e., the
combination of aspects such as media knowledge, media
criticism, media use and media design as well as basic
knowledge of, but not limited to, the functionalities of
computer science systems. While existing programs for
seniors, such as computer, smartphone or tablet courses,
peer learning programs or technology support and
consultation hours, mostly address media competence, the
program developed here is intended to place a greater focus
on computer science competence. By teaching ideas and
concepts from computer science, transferable knowledge of
this domain is to be fostered beyond the competence of using
digital devices. The target group consists of people aged 50
and above who have little or no previous experience in the
use of digital technologies. In order to support learning
success in this area, which is new to the target group, it
is essential to take geragogics into account. Three
important aspects in this context are (1) learning with
people with similar interests, (2) learning in a protected
space, and (3) quick help with questions and problems. The
offer developed here therefore does not only rely on the use
of the developed learning app (InfoBiTS), but rather embeds
it in a course concept. A workshop setting has proven
suitable for this purpose. An online setting is also
suitable, with some restrictions. The InfoBiTS app includes
four learning modules that deal with the topics of
communication, functionality of the Internet, mobile devices
and the Internet, as well as data protection and data
security. The modules each address competencies from the
curriculum for seniors, which has been developed as part of
this work and is based on national and international school
curricula as well as the interests of the target group,
which were collected in a questionnaire with 123
participants. Furthermore, topics of current relevance as
well as connecting topics to the everyday life of the target
group, e.g. communication with (distantly living) children
and grandchildren, were significant for the concrete
selection of topics. While the pilot study was conducted in
a workshop setting, the evaluation was conducted in an
online setting due to the restrictions imposed by the
pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. A total of 19
participants between 50 and 84 years old attended. In
particular, the evaluation showed that the sense of control
in using and over technology improved significantly compared
with before the first module and after the last module.
Furthermore, the results of a module-related self-assessment
and the completion of the tasks within the modules indicate
that the intended learning objectives in the modules were
mostly achieved, which points to a fostering of the
addressed competencies from the curriculum. Lastly, the
evaluation of DigComp 2.1, the European reference framework

abstract = {Nowadays, digitalization is increasingly finding its way into all areas of daily life. This poses new challenges for people who have little experience in dealing with digital devices, particularly senior citizens. In this paper, we introduce InfoBiTS, a native Android application that provides computer science related content for seniors and aims to foster digital competencies of seniors. In addition to basics in the use of mobile devices, the app contains four modules, whose content was selected from school curricula for computer science, topics of current relevance, interests of seniors as well as contents relevant to seniors’ day-to-day activities. The target groups’ interests and everyday life relevance are particularly important, since research in geragogics shows that they are important aspects for learning in old age. Each of the four modules combines learning content with hands-on exercises. For research purposes, different questionnaires are integrated in the application and activity data is logged and stored as xAPI statements in a Learning Analytics component. A first pilot study showed a good usability and indicated the importance of relevance to the everyday life of the target group. Furthermore, participants preferred a mixture of text and video elements as opposed to pure text modules.},

abstract = {We propose a novel method to synthesize geometric models from a given class of context-aware structured shapes such as buildings and other man-made objects. Our central idea is to leverage powerful machine learning methods from the area of natural language processing for this task. To this end, we propose a technique that maps shapes to strings and vice versa, through an intermediate shape graph representation. We then convert procedurally generated shape repositories into text databases that in turn can be used to train a variational autoencoder which enables higher level shape manipulation and synthesis like, e.g., interpolation and sampling via its continuous latent space.},

abstract = {Automatic synthesis of high quality 3D shapes is an ongoing and challenging area of research. While several data-driven methods have been proposed that make use of neural networks to generate 3D shapes, none of them reach the level of quality that deep learning synthesis approaches for images provide. In this work we present a method for a convolutional point cloud decoder/generator that makes use of recent advances in the domain of image synthesis. Namely, we use Adaptive Instance Normalization and offer an intuition on why it can improve training. Furthermore, we propose extensions to the minimization of the commonly used Chamfer distance for auto-encoding point clouds. In addition, we show that careful sampling is important both for the input geometry and in our point cloud generation process to improve results. The results are evaluated in an auto-encoding setup to offer both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The proposed decoder is validated by an extensive ablation study and is able to outperform current state of the art results in a number of experiments. We show the applicability of our method in the fields of point cloud upsampling, single view reconstruction, and shape synthesis.},
